Reflection

David Pye: The Nature & Design of Aesthetics
When designing something, David Pye says, one must consider what it’s purpose will be and what will be the best way to construct the item. For our project, the item is a box and the purpose of it is to hold or contain an object. He also talks about the idea of design as a conceptual solution to a problem. Design is not linear and therefore does not end once a single solution is found. He compares this to the idea of ending personal suffering. Pye states that “The answer must be that the relief is not an end in itself, but has a purpose: to make life more worth living for someone.“ He also emphasizes the importance of improvement on what already exists by making it function better, be economically more efficient, or some other improvement. The point I liked a lot that he made was don’t be limited by what your brain thinks. Basically he says there is a way, nowadays, to cut or shape virtually any material, so don’t get caught up on assumed limitations.
