Object of Design (5 Sketches)
The first image I chose is a quick gesture of my binder clip. The reason I decided to showcase this one is because I like the simplicity of its shading and lines. By being sketchy and done quickly, the viewer can get a sense of the binder clip in a looser format. I also like the angle of the clip in the gesture sketch.
The next three pictures I chose to post are all variations of negative space drawings. I personally find the new perspective fascinating; the concept of forming the object by defining the space around it, rather than detailing the space inside of it, makes the image more visually stimulating to the viewer. The viewer's brain has to fill in the void of where the object is suppose to be based off the outlines that the negative space creates. It was my goal in all the negative space drawings to capture the various interesting shapes that clip formed. In the middle negative space drawing I even refined one of the shapes because it reminded me of a bird. I also experimented with a patterned background for the third negative space picture. The main purpose of these drawings is for the viewer to take a different approach while observing everyday items, like a binder clip in my case. I believe the images are also successful because they have such strong contrast.
The final image I decided to put up is a volumetric combination drawing that uses the techniques: scribble gesture, contour line, and value shading (through blended and cross hatched styles). The reason I selected this one is because I focused on positioning it a picture plane rather than simply drawing the entire clip. By doing this, the image is broken up into interesting positive and negative spaces and I believe that is what makes this image successful. The viewer can also see clearly one of the various poses of the binder clip.
