Writer's Toolbox Reflection

While you would normally think to find a Writer's Toolbox book in an English classroom, the concepts outlined in this excerpt apply directly to design. The integrated style of using both written and visual aids to assist in stating your ideas is a powerful tool in the design world. This concept is traced back to the times of Da Vinci, among other artists who also used this technique. They said that combining writing and sketching stimulates both the right and left hemispheres of the brain, also known as the “whole brain.” It then talked about the use of a mind-map to come up with initial ideas, which, as the book states, “gives a visual form to ideas.” It also said that concept maps focus on the development of conceptual ideas that revolve around investigation. Freewriting can be used as a loosening, flowing of thoughts to get you ready to write.
